Manchester aldermen vote to keep Calef Road fire station open

MIKE CRONIN, HE’S LIVE WITH THE DETAILS. MIKE: ALDERMEN DISCUSSED THIS ISSUE FOR ABOUT AN HOUR BUT ULTIMATELY JUST WITHIN THE PAST FEW MINUTES THEY VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO KEEP THAT FIRE STATION WE JUST TALKED TO THE CHIEF WHO TOLD US THAT THIS IS A BAND-AID, HOWEVER, HE WAS ASKING FOR 138 THOUSAND DOLLARS BECAUSE OF CUTS THAT WERE MADE TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT’S PROPOSED BUDGET. THE CHIEF SAID HE WAS EITHER GOING TO NEED TO CLOSE THE FIRE STATION ON CALIPH ROAD OR LAYOFF — CALEF ROAD OR LAYOFF FIREFIGHTERS AND HE SAYS THIS $138,000 IS COMING UP BECAUSE SOME FIREFIGHTERS ARE RETIRING THIS YEAR SO HE NEEDS THIS MONEY FOR SEVERANCE. HE SAYS THIS IS A BAND-AID IN THE MEANTIME BECAUSE IF MORE FIREFIGHTERS ULTIMATELY DO DECIDE TO RETIRE, THEY WILL HAVE TO REVISIT THIS ISSUE. FOR NOW THAT FIRE STATION WILL STAY OPEN AND ALDERMEN WILL TAKE UP THIS ISSUE AGAIN AT A BUDGET MEETING ON JULY 18.
