Harrisville Fire Department Mourning Loss of Longtime Volunteer


(DN) FIRST THIS FRIDAY — OUR TOP LOCAL STORY — A 44-YEAR VETERAN VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER IS BEING REMEMBERED… LAWRENCE (caston-gay) CASTONGUAY OF BURRILLVILLE WAS KILLED WEDNESDAY NIGHT IN A COLLISION ON PUTNAM PIKE. THE HARRISVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT IS NOW IN MOURNING THE LOSS OF THEIR COLLEAGUE. EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER JARED PLINER IS TALKING TO HARRISVILLE FIRE CREWS AND JOINS US LIVE WITH THE MOBILE NEWSROOM. VOLUNTEERING HIS TIME. HIS INCREDIBLE HANDY WORK. COLLEAGUES SAY HE WAS MR. FIX-IT AROUND THE DEPARTMENT. THE RESULTS ARE EVERYWHERE. LARRY CASTONGUAY WAS WITH HIS WIFE IN HIS NEW PICKUP TRUCK, WEDNESDAY NIGHT, WHEN POLICE SAY A 27 YEAR OLD TRYING TO SPIN HIS TIRES, LOST CONTROL IN GLOCESTER AND HIT THE COUPLE. FIRE CHIEF MARK ST. PIERRE CAME ON TO THE DEPARTMENT OVER 40 YEARS AGO ALSO — AND REMEMBERS HIS QUIET, MILD-MANNERED, FRIEND. “He was great with his hands. He could fix plumbing, electrical, do welding. Anything we needed fixed, we used to check and see if Larry could fix it first, before we made a decision to send it out to be fixed.” “It’s just senseless. Just totally senseless.” LARRY’S WIFE, MARIE, WAS SERIOUSLY HURT IN THE CRASH. THE CHIEF SAYS LARRY HAD BEEN TAKING SOME TIME OFF DUE TO MEDICAL ISSUES AND HIS DOCTORS HAD JUST CLEARED HIM TO RETURN TO ACTIVE DUTY. THE 27 YEAR OLD SUSPECT, SAMUEL SMITH OF CT, IS SET TO BE BACK IN COURT IN NOVEMBER. JARED PLINER, EYEWITNESS NEWS. (DN)
