Firefighter killed, others injured in Farmington explosion identified

RESPONSE TEAM IS GOING THROUGH
THIS AND THE EVIDENCE IS
EVERYWHERE. STREWN ALL ACROSS THIS
NEIGHBORHOOD. HERE I AM ALMOST TWO STREETS
AWAY FROM WHERE THE BLAST
HAPPENED. AND THERE IS INSULATION ALL OVER
THIS AREA. THE HOUSE I’M STANDING NEXT TO
HEAD ITS WINDOWS BLOWN OUT BY
THE BLAST. SHOWING YOU THE FORCE OF THE
EXPLOSION THAT HAPPENED THIS
MORNING. WE ARE GETTING THE DETAILED THAT
MICHAEL BUT WAS KILLED AND
SEVERAL OTHER FIREFIGHTERS
INJURED. THEIR CURRENT
STATUS. RIGHT NOW WE WANT TO BRING IN
OJIM. JIM, WORDS, PICTURES, DESPITE
THAT DRONE, THEY DO NOT DO IT
JUSTICE. JIM: I DON’T KNOW IF THEY CAN
ZOOM IN. THERE IS A TREE AND IN THAT TREE
DANGLING PIECES OF METAL, AND
INSTALLATION. THAT GOES TO SHOW THE STUFF WENT
EVERYWHERE. WHEN THAT BLAST HAPPENED AFTER 8
A.M. THIS MORNING. EMPLOYEES OF LEAP INC., AN
OFFICE BUILDING ON FARMINGTON
FALLS ROAD. THEY SMELLED GAS. THEY CALLED 911 IMMEDIATELY. FIRE FIGHTERS WENT RIGHT INTO
THE BUILDING. AS SOON AS THEY DID THAT IS WHEN
THE BUILDING BLEW UP. AGAIN, THE CAPTAIN OF THE FIRE
DEPARTMENT MICHAEL BELL WAS
KILLED ON THE SCENE. FOUR OF THE FIREFIGHTERS
INCLUDING THE FIRE CHIEF, WHICH
IS LIKE ABOUT’S B– MICHAEL
BELL’S BROTHER WAS INJURED AND
THE MAINTENANCE MANAGER AND AN
AMBULANCE EMPLOYEE. ALL THREE OF THE STATE’S LIFE
FLIGHT HELICOPTER’S ZOOMED TO
FARMINGTON THIS MORNING TO
AIRLIFT THOSE INJURED PEOPLE TO
AREA HOSPITALS. BUT WE DID SPEAK WITH A
FARMINGTON POLICE CHIEF AND HE
SAYS YOU CANNOT TRAIN FOR
SOMETHING LIKE THIS.>>WE TRAIN BUT I DON’T KNOW
THAT WE HAVE EVER TRAINED FOR
SOMETHING THAT WE HAPPENED THIS
MORNING. WE CERTAINLY DO NOT EXPECT TO
LOSE SOMEBODY THAT WE HAVE
WORKED WITH FOR YEARS AND A
LOVED ONE, AND A MEMBER OF OUR
FAMILY. JIM: AND GOVERNOR JANET MILLS
ARRIVED ON THE SCENE THIS
AFTERNOON. COMPLETE AND UTTER DEVASTATION. SHE SAID SHE GAVE HER
CONDOLENCES TO THOSE THAT WERE
INJURED IN THE FALLEN
FIREFIGHTER. VOWING TO FIND OUT WHAT EXACTLY
HAPPENED HERE, BECAUSE SHE SAYS
SHE DOES NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN
TO ANOTHER COMMUNITY. SO, THE FIRE MARSHALL’S OFFICE,
AND THEY HAVE A TEAM, HALF A
DOZEN INVESTIGATORS, THE ATF IS
HERE, THEY ARE GOING TO GO
THROUGH THIS RUBBLE. THEY ARE GOING TO PINPOINT THE
SOURCE OF THE EXPLOSION. FROM THERE, WE WILL FIND OUT,
HOPEFULLY WHAT COSTS THIS, BUT
AGAIN, THIS IS NOT AN ANOMALY. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES
IN MAINE AND ACROSS NEW ENGLAND. STEVE: IT IS REMARKABLE TO SEE
THE FIRE TRUCKS TO RESPOND
TO THE INITIAL CAUSE OF THAT GAS
