Fire Station 1 in York County moves to new $7.3 million facility


A NEW FIRE STATION ON THE PENINSULA MEANS CREWS CAN GET TO MORE EMERGENCIES, FASTER. (STEPHANIE) AND THAT MEANS SAVING MORE LIVES. 10 ON YOUR SIDE’S AESIA TOLIVER JUST GOT BACK FROM YORK COUNTY AND HAS AN INSIDE LOOK AT FIRE STATION ONE. (AESIA) THE LAST NEW FIRE STATION IN YORK COUNTY WAS BUILT BACK IN 1991. THERE’S 6 FIRE STATIONS IN THE COUNTY BUT THIS ONE HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN THE COMMUNITIES HEART, AND THE CHIEF SAYS THEY DID IT UP RIGHT. (AESIA) FIRE STATION ONE IN YORK COUNTY HAS A RICH HISTORY. IT WAS THE FIRST ONE BUILT IN THE AREA, MADE POSSIBLE BY THESE COMMUNITY MEMBERS, WHO WANTED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IN IT’S PRIME 60 YEARS AGO IT SERVED THE COMMUNITY WELL, BUT NOT EVERYTHING AGES LIKE A FINE WINE. STEVE KOPCZYNSKI/ YORK COUNTY FIRE CHIEF “WE BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE MAINTENENCE CHALLENGES THE SPACE WAS INADEQUATE FOR OUR OPERATIONS IN FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICES THESE DAYS THE CREW QUARTERS NEEDED TO BE UPDATED” SO AFTER NEARLY 10 YEARS OF PLANNING, THE CREW FROM FIRE STATION 1 OFFICIALLY MOVED INTO THEIR NEW 7.5 MILLION DOLLAR FACILITY OFF DARE ROAD. THAT’S ABOUT A BLOCK AWAY FROM THE OLD ONE. (AESIA) THE OLD STATION, WHICH IS ABOUT A BLOCK AWAY FROM THE NEW ONE, IS OFFICIALLY CLOSED. IT’LL HOLD LIBRARY STORAGE UNTIL THEY FIND A MORE PERMAMENT USE.
