Fire Response Investigation: Bitter battle between two fire departments

RESPONSE IN ONE COMMUNITY. INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER PAUL VAN OSDOL REPORTS. IF WE CALL FOR AN ENGINE, YOU BRING A FRESH TRUCK. NEVER. NEVER. THIS GUY HERE IS FULL OF CRAP. THE EMOTIONS WERE HIGH WHEN THE SUPERVISORS MET TO VOTE ON AN ORDINANCE REQUIRING THE TWO LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENTS TO WORK TOGETHER. WE’VE ASKED BOTH OUR DEPARTMENTS TO WORK THAT OUT. BOTH FIRE DEPARTMENTS CANNOT WORK THAT OUT. THE DISPUTE CENTERS ON AL EWING’S PRACTICE OF RESPONDING TO FIRES IN HIS PERSONAL CAR. THEN CALLING IN A TRUCK IF IT’S SERIOUS. IT’S BETTER THAN A LOT OF FIRE TRUCKS RUNNING UP AND DOWN THE ROAD IN OUR OPINION. BUT OFFICIALS AT STATION 1 SAY 2 SOMETIMES FAILS TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE RESPONSE. THERE WAS A BRUSH TRUCK THERE FOR NUMBER 2. NOT AN ENGINE. WHY IS THAT A PROBLEM? BECAUSE THEY WERE CALLING FOR AN ENGINE. Reporter: FIREFIGHTERS ANGRILY DENY IT. YOU’RE FULL OF IT. ALLEGATIONS THAT THE DEPARTMENTS WERE REMOVING EACH OTHER FROM THEIR RUN CARDS. THE OFFICIAL DOCUMENT THAT 911 USERS WHEN THEY DISPATCH TRUCKS TO A FIRE. YOU SAID YOU WOULD GO OFF YOUR RUN CARD. I NEVER SAID THAT. IT WOULD REQUIRE BOTH DEPARTMENTS TO SEND FIRE TRUCKS TO A FIRE CALL, PAYING A FINE OF UP TO $1,000. THAT ANGERED THE CROWD EVEN MORE. THEY SHOULD BE PUNISHED TO PROTECTING ALL OF OUR CITIZENS. Reporter: AND QUESTIONS ABOUT CONFLICTS OF INTEREST. SINCE TWO TOWNSHIP SUPERVISORS ARE MEMBERS OF STATION 1. YOU’VE GOT A CONFLICT OF INTEREST HERE. Reporter: THE TOWNSHIP SUPERVISORS DECIDED TO TABLE THE PROPOSAL AND TOLD THE TWO FIRE CHIEFS TO MEET FOR THE THIRD TIME TO TRY TO SETTLE THEIR DIFFERENCES. WILL THEY BE ABLE TO GET ALONG?

  • I don't get it. Around my area, all of the fire chiefs usually respond to the scene in department-owned chief cars they use as their personal vehicles when they are chief. They used to use their own POVs until about 15-20 years ago.

  • This is an embarrassment to the entire fire service. Both departments need to act like actual, organized and professional departments or get someone else to do it. Pathetic.

  • My humble opinion is that the chief should run straight to scene if it is closer than the hall, or if the station has already emptied. As well, you should always lead with the most useful apparatus, and do not hesitate to take them all. Time is of the essence, dump the station and get there fast. There was an incident where only one unit arrived to a scene and it was a fully involved structure fire. They had a lot of 'splainin to do.

  • Fire both departments and hire the next nearest department. See if that get's them to behave less like 3rd graders.

  • Unacceptable, period. Grown "adults" acting like children and who have no business doing this job anymore.
Did all of these "firefighters" forget why they came on the job in tbe first place?
L.I.P. That's OUR number one priority.
Take your childish politics and go back to the sandbox.

  • Respond pov THEN call for an engine if it’s serious!?!? 🙄. Give me a break, lots of water and ladders on that Personal vehicle. Sad that the “old” fire service is still hanging on in certain areas. Time for a new chief.

  • so the chief responds first, and then only then calls a truck if he deems necessary!? wow, what a senile moron. That is NOT how it is done. Case closed.
