FIRE, A VERY REAL AND POTENTIAL THREAT ABOARD
ANY SHIP, IS WHY SAILORS UNDERGO RIGOROUS TRAINING IN ORDER TO COMBAT THIS ENEMY WHEREVER
IT MAY REAR ITS UGLY FACE. IF ANYTHING DOES HAPPEN TO THE SHIP, IT CAN
HAPPEN ANYWHERE, AND EVERYBODY ONBOARD NEEDS TO KNOW WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO REACT. ALSO, JUST TO GET FAMILIAR WITH THE EQUIPMENT
SO THAT A HOSE ISN’T UNFAMILIAR OR, YOU KNOW, TO KNOW WHAT YOU NEED WHEN YOU GO INTO FIGHT
THE FIRE. DAMAGE CONTROL MEN OR DC’S ARE THE NAVY’S
FOREMOST EXPERTS IN FIREFIGHTING AND DAMAGE CONTROL, BUT THEY CAN’T DO IT ALONE. WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH DC’S ON THE ASHLAND WE
HAVE A LITTLE OVER 300 PEOPLE OF JUST NAVY, BUT WE HAVE DOUBLE THAT WHEN WE PICK UP THE
MARINES. THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE IN A SMALL SPACE. SO EVERYBODY HAS TO KNOW WHAT TO DO, THAT’S
WHY WE ALL NEED TO KNOW BASIC UMM MEDICAL SKILLS AS WELL. JUST TO BE ABLE TO HELP, LIKE THE OLD SAYING
ONE TEAM, ONE FIGHT. THIS HANDS-ON LESSON LED BY THE MOBILE DAMAGE
CONTROL TRAINING TEAM WILL BE INVALUABLE TO THE SHIP’S COMPANY IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY. PETTY OFFICER ZACHARY HALE FLEET ACTIVITIES
