‘Definitely My Hero’: Firefighter Steven Pollard Remembered

Reporter: HE HAD ONLY BEEN A FIREFIGHTER FOR YEAR AND A HALF WHEN HE MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE. THE 30-YEAR-OLD WAS RESPONDING TO A CAR CRASH SUNDAY NIGHT ON THE BELT PARKWAY AT MILL BASIN BRIDGE WHEN HE FELL 52 FEET TO HIS DEATH. FIRE OFFICIALS SAY HE WAS TRYING TO CROSS OVER THE CONCRETE BARRIERS TO GET TO WHERE TRAVIS SIMS WAS TRAPPED. HE RISKED HIS LIFE IN ORDER TO SAVE MINE, AND HE ENDED UP MAKING THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE. Reporter: HE IS A CORRECTIONS OFFICER AT RIKERS ISLAND AND WAS ON HIS WAY TO WORK WHEN HE HIT A PATCH OF ICE THAT SENT HIS CAR SPINNING. ANOTHER CAR HIT IS, ROLLING IT OVER. STEVEN POLLARD SLIP THROUGH A THREE FOOT GAP BEFORE HE COULD REACH THE SAME. I DIDN’T SEE HIM FALL DOWN, BUT I HEARD THE COMMOTION. JUST OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD. WHEN I ARRIVED AT THE HOSPITAL, THAT IS WHEN I FOUND OUT HE DID NOT MAKE IT.
