Chesapeake Fire Department now uses vending system to dispense medical supplies

(STEPHANIE) IT’S THE FIRST OF ITS KIND AT A FIRE DEPARTMENT IN HAMPTON ROADS AND ONLY THE 4TH ONE ACROSS THE COMMONWEALTH. 10 ON YOUR SIDE’S BRANDI CUMMINGS IS LIVE IN OUR NEWSROOM WITH DETAILS ON HOW IT WORKS AND HOW MUCH IT HAS COST TAXPAYERS. CREWS GOT SUPPLIES ONLY AFTER SENDING AN EMAIL. RESTOCKING WAS ESTIMATED. (CAPTAIN SCOTT SAUNDERS, CHESAPEAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT) “THERE COULD BE A DELAY WHEN THAT EMAIL WAS RECIEVED OR WHEN THAT ORDER WAS FILLED.” THEN THERE WERE FUEL COSTS BECAUSE CREWS COULD ONLY GET SUPPLIES FROM HERE- NO MATTER WHERE THEY WERE WHEN WE’RE TALKING TO A CREW COMING FROM ALL THE WAY FROM WESTERN BRANCH THAT’S A LONG RIDE NOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED. THINKING THEY MAY NEED MORE WHEN ACTUALLY IN TURN THEY NEED LESS. THE NEW SYSTEM, THREE YEARS IN THE MAKING, LAUNCHED MONDAY. IT SPEEDS UP THE PROCESS TO GET SUPPLIES AND HELPS KEEP UP WITH COST. SO FAR THIS YEAR CHESAPEAKE CREWS HAVE HAD MORE THAN 27-THOUSAND CALLS FOR SERVICE. 76 PERCENT OF THOSE ARE EMS CALLS….WHERE SUPPLIES LIKE THESE ARE BEING USED. – CAPTAIN SCOTT SAUNDERS, TYPCALLY USE ON A CERTAIN TYPE OF CALL. THE SYSTEM WON’T IMPACT RESPONSE TIMES, INSTEAD IT’LL REDUCE DELAYS. NATS OF FIRE TRUCK (BRANDI) RIGHT NOW THERE ARE FIVE SYSTEMS ACROSS CHESAPEAKE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WILL SOON BEGIN A JOINT PARTNERSHIP WITH CHESAPEAKE REGIONAL TO ALSO BE ABLE TO RESTOCK AT THE HOSPITALS.
