Almost 2 years after tornado, new Autryville fire station built to last


CHAPLAINS WITH THE BILLY GRAHAM RAPID RESPONSE TEAM ARE HEADED SOUTH TO HELP. THE ROLE IS TO OFFER SPIRITUAL COMFORT IN THE COMMUNITIES. NEARLY 2 YEARS AGO A TORNADO DESTROYED A FIRE STATION. THEY WORKED OUT OF TRAILERS FOR 22 MONTHS AND NOW THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HAS A BRAND-NEW BUILDING. WE ARE LIVE IN SAMPSON COUNTY WHERE WE WERE ABLE TO TOUR THE NEW FIRE DEPARTMENT. Reporter: TODAY WE GOT AN INSIDE LOOK, IT IS ONE THAT THE FIRE CHIEF SAYS CAN NOW WITHSTAND ANOTHER TORNADO AND HIGH WIND. THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE WHEN THAT TORNADO HIT INTO THOUSAND 17. FIVE FIREFIGHTERS WERE STILL INSIDE. THEY TOOK COVER UNDERNEATH ONE OF THE TRUCKS. IT WAS A FIRE TRUCK TO SAVE THEM THAT DAY, THEY STILL HAD TO TRY TO SAVE EVERYONE ELSE, WORKING WITH THE BUILDING FALLING DOWN AROUND THEM. THE ONLY THINGS THAT WERE LEFT WERE THE WALLS OF OUR STATION AND THESE FLAGPOLES. AFTER TWO YEARS EVERYTHING CHANGED. WHERE WE PUT THIS UP IT WAS A SURREAL MOMENT AND IT SHOWS THAT WE WERE DONE IN A WAY. THERE ARE A LOT OF LITTLE PROJECTS, WE NEVER THOUGHT THESE WOULD ACTUALLY GET PUT UP. WHEN IT DID HAPPEN IT WAS BIG FOR MOST OF US. CONSTRUCTION FINISHED ON A NEW STATION THAT THE FIRE CHIEF SAYS HAVE MORE ROOM FOR FIRE TRUCKS AND IF BILL STRONGER TO HOLD UP. I FEEL LIKE WE BUILT THE STRONGEST BUILDING WE COULD BUILD. IT IS RATED FOR STRONG WIND. I JUST HOPE WE DON’T HAVE TO TEST IT OUT. THE FIRE CHIEF SAYS IT COST THEM THREE QUARTERS OF $1 MILLION, $750,000 TO BUILD THE
